With all of the different types of threats out there, how can I protect my
resources and data?
Defense in Depth
You can protect the Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability (CIA) of your
data and network devices by implementing several layers of protection also
known as Defense in Depth. By having several layers of security, various
threats are mitigated at different layers. In order for a threat to be
successful in harming your network or data, it must be able to get through
all the layers of security.
For example, an organization may have a firewall between their LAN and the
Internet. They then may have firewalls on their user's workstations. They
also will have anti-virus/anti-spyware software on their workstations. They
may have the network devices and servers physically secured so that only
authorized persons may work on them. They may have a separation of duties
so that there is no one person that can perform sensitive tasks.
These layers are just some examples of how an organization can use the
Defense in Depth approach to ensure the CIA of their resources and data.
